Let's learn!
Are you a homeschooling family, and working with a struggling reader? I would love to talk with you!
Are you a homeschooling family, and working with a struggling reader? I would love to talk with you!
My name is Becky Unruh. I began homeschooling in 2005. Let's just say, things did not go as I had planned. My house was full of frustration over the task of learning to read. There began my journey! What a road it has been, full of highs and lows. I am ever so thankful for all I have learned and continue to learn from some of the best of the best in the field of struggling readers!
In 2009 I started a 3 year program to become a Literacy Intervention Specialist. I completed that in 2012 with no real plans to take it past teaching my own children how to read. God had other plans. My youngest was struggling so badly in 2017, and we chose to enroll her in our local dyslexia school. From there, I taught part time, and in 2019 I started a private practice and took my national exam to become a Certified Academic Language Therapist. (CALT). I am currently working on my Master of Arts in Teaching Dyslexia and am a Qualified Instructor in Training.
I am trained in Alphabetic Phonics, Dubard Association Method, and Take Flight. Each of these amazing programs are Orton Gillingham programs that can be tailored to fit your students needs.
1995 B.A. Social Work, Eastern Mennonite University.
2012 Literacy Intervention Specialist, trained from Fundamental Learning Center, Wichita, Ks.
2020 Certified Academic Language Therapist. (member of ALTA)
Currently working on my M.A.T. Dyslexia Specialist from Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Co. Projected graduation May 2024
Also, currently working on my Qualified Instructor endorsement.
Working with my own children, as a homeschool mom, was where I began this journey. This is my crew. My 3 oldest children are grown and graduated, leaving me homeschooling my youngest and spending more time working with struggling readers in our local homeschool community.
We are located in Reno County, Kansas and our homeschool community is growing, just like so many other places. I work one on one with struggling readers. I see it as a partnership between the homeschooling mom and myself. I have the best students!!
I often have a wait list for reading therapy, but I am happy to do an informal assessment and help you to find curriculum choices that will benefit your child.
Every student has unique needs for support. I am happy to visit with you and your child to create intentional direction for their literacy needs.

Dyslexia is a learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties are typically a result of a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and effective classroom instruction. (Shaywitz, 2003)
Dyslexia Therapists do more than administer a program. They are clinically diagnostic and prescriptive. Therapists use their advanced training to provide intensive, results driven instruction. They are skilled in Multisensory structured language and are trained to be attuned to their students specific needs.
